What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is based on the idea confirmed by scientific studies that individuals have the innate ability to control certain bodily functions and their responses.

Just as a thermometer tells your body temperature and stepping on a scale tells your body weight by “feeding back” information about your body’s condition, biofeedback also provides you with valuable information about your body and mind, allowing you to control certain body and mind conditions.

Biofeedback is a treatment technique in which people are taught to improve their health by applying certain responses to signals from their own bodies. Specialized biofeedback equipment is used to monitor these signals and teach you to control certain body functions and their responses.

Biofeedback can be particularly useful in treating stress-related disorders as well as chronic pain. Conditions known to be helped with biofeedback include:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Migraine and Tension Headaches
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Cardiac Arrhythmia
  • Abnormal Breathing Patterns
  • Panic Disorders
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Raynaud’s Disease

Even if you don’t have a specific disease or condition, biofeedback may improve your overall health and well-being.
